Grapefruit Seed Extract is a Good Natural Alternative – If It’s Not Adulterated

Sometimes called a “superfood”, grapefruit seed extract (GSE) is liquid taken from the fruit and seeds of grapefruit. It is used to treat infections, and has many benefits. But does it work? And is it safe?

Grapefruit trees are common to many subtropical climates around the world so the fruit is quite readily available.

In 1972, physicist Dr. Jacob Harich discovered that grapefruits were used traditionally to treat infections in multiple countries. His research also uncovered a wide range of treatments and uses for this versatile whole food.

Is It Safe?

Be aware! Commercially available GSE frequently contains synthetic antibacterial disinfectants and cleansers, such as triclosan and benzalkonium chloride.

Either be sure you’re buying quality GSE, or make your own (instructions below).

Where To Use Grapefruit Seed Extract

  • GSE is great for healing skin wounds and scar tissue, as well as some skin infections.
  • Try it to treat toenail fungus infections.
  • It acts as a preservative – so look for cosmetics that use it instead of nasty chemical additives.
  • Apply GSE to the fur and skin of your pets to help discourage fleas.
  • It makes an eco-friendly plant spray, helping to guard against pests and diseases..

Internal Uses of Grapefruit Seed Extract

It is also possible to eat or drink grapefruit seed extract in the form of capsules or a diluted liquid – be sure to buy good quality or make your own.

  • grapefruit seed extract from grapefruitsIt is said that grapefruit seed extract contains antioxidants, healthy phytonutrients and vitamins.
  • Many people use GSE to help stabilize their pH level, which is central to a healthy digestive system.
  • It may also help to improve your digestive health, ease food poisoning and reduce stress in the stomach.
  • It may help to lower levels of unhealthy cholesterol
  • Grapefruit seed extract is said to boost your immune system.

Personally, I don’t think GSE is the cure-all that it is marketed to be, but I think there’s certainly a  place for pure grapefruit seed extract.

How To Make GSE at Home

You will need:- lots of grapefruits, a cold press and a grinder.

  1. Remove the seeds of the grapefruits and wash them.
  2. Allow to dry for about 24 hours
  3. (You can cook the seeds at a very low temperature during this time if you wish, in order to get more oil from the seeds).
  4. Grind the seeds in a grinder so they become a fine powder.
  5. You may wish to dissolve the powder into pure water to remove the bulk of the grapefruit seed, which includes fiber and pectin.
  6. Add the seeds to the cold press, and press until you can see the separation between the oil and the solids.
  7. Skim the oil from the solids and store it in glass bottles in a cool location out of direct sunlight.

This is a lot of work, but at least you know what’s going into your GSE, and that there are no nasty additives.

Conclusion

GSE has proven to combat over 800 viral and bacterial strains.

It’s always better to use simpler solutions instead of chemical alternatives.

But remember that if you take GSE as a supplement, it’s really easy to misuse it without realizing it – see Supplements – Do they Really Work?.
