Make Sure You’re Not Making These Top 5 Smoothie Mistakes – They’ll Sabotage Your Goals

top 5 smoothie mistakes

Smoothies are delicious and can help you to lose weight, keep you feeling full and balance your blood sugar levels – when they’re made the right way.  But I see a lot of people making mistakes with their smoothies – and then wondering why they’re not feeling better or losing weight.

Here are the top 5 smoothie mistakes that I see often. Read this post and you’ll know how to avoid these top 5 smoothie mistakes, so that your smoothies will meet your wellness goals.

#1 Using Fruit Juices

don't add bottled juices to smoothiesI see this smoothie mistake all the time in store-bought smoothies, but many people do this at home too. Adding fruit juices to your smoothies might seem like a good idea – but many store-bought juices contain extra sugar and other additives. Using fruit juices may add up to 26g of sugar / fructose to your smoothie, and that’s not healthy!

What should you add? Well, I like the flavor of freshly-squeezed orange juice in some of my smoothies. But I’ve recently started adding just a small amount, so that I get the flavour and taste, and then adding water for the rest of the liquid I need to blend the ingredients. It’s the best of both worlds – the flavour of fresh oranges, with hardly any calories or fructose! For some smoothies I add sparkling water, which gives a slight “fizz” to the drink, yum.

Or of course you can add milk of your choice – but be sure to choose unsweetened.

use water not fruit juices in your smoothiesBut use water whenever you can – zero calories, zero sugar or fructose, and tap water (filtered if necessary) is far, far cheaper and more eco-friendly than buying juice or milk.

On the topic of fruit, many people make smoothies that are mostly fruit. For the best health benefit, smoothies should contain mostly vegetables, and perhaps a little spice. Then add a few berries for natural sweetness – they’re low in sugar and high in antioxidants.

#2 No variety

When you discover a smoothie you really love, don’t keep making only that one. You need to keep trying new recipes so that you’ll get better nutrition from many different ingredients (and you won’t get bored).

#3  Too Much Protein Powder

Many people add several scoops of different types of protein powder. Yes, protein powder can be good, but only in moderation. Just add one recommended serving (e.g. one scoop). More than that isn’t healthy.

Or better yet, avoid the powder and use a natural source of protein – yogurt for example provides protein and fills you up. Be sure to use plain, unsweetened yoghurt with no additives. Greek yogurt has the highest protein.

I always avoid low-fat yogurt, as the natural fats have been removed during processing, and often artificial additives replace them. A smoothie made mostly from vegetables is naturally very low-calorie, so you can afford the calories in full-fat yogurt.

#4 Using Kale If You Have Digestion Problems

kale is a top 5 smoothie mistake if you have digestion issuesKale is a fabulous leafy green that’s full of nutrition. However, if you have problems with your digestion (e.g. IBS or colitis) then your body will struggle to digest raw kale.

You can steam kale before adding it to your smoothie, or simply ring the changes by adding a variety of other leafy greens to your smoothies.

#5 Not Using Fats

If you avoid fats in your smoothies, they won’t fill you up. When you get hungry, you’re more likely to snack on the wrong stuff.

So use fats in moderation to improve satiety or fullness. Good sources of natural fats include full fat yogurt, avocados, and nut butters (be sure they don’t have added sugar or oil).
