Why Organic Wine is More Fun – Or, How to Drink Wine Like an Environmentalist!

organic wine is more funDo you drink wine?  I love wine! But a 2013 study of hundreds of French wines found that fully 90% of them tested positive for pesticide residues.

Organic wine, however, avoids many problems.

  3. Why there is a slight down-side

Wine is Good for You (Hooray!)

Wine is full of antioxidants, and red wine has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease. (When drunk in moderation of course). It may also reduce the risk of certain cancers, and slow the progression of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

All of these benefits are truly wonderful. But did you know that organic varieties may offer more benefits than your standard bottle?

Why Organic Wine is More Fun

it's not all organic wineHere are the benefits of drinking wine that is grown organically:

  1. Normally, wines are grown with pesticides to protect the grapes. There may also be fungicides, herbicides and artificial fertilisers. But organic wines use compost and manure rather than toxic chemicals to feed and nurture the vines. – and so your wine is free from potential nasties.
  2. Organic or biodynamic farming is the process of balancing the soil, animals, and nature to take advantage of all the environment’s resources. Without pesticides in the soil and our water supply, wines that are produced using organic methods are better for the environment. The ‘garden idyll’ state of organic vineyards, bustling with insects and birds, wild flowers and grasses, is another important reason to support chemical-free viticulture.
  3. Normal wines can have additives in them. But wine that is certified organic is not allowed to have additives – so what you get is the simple pleasure of a good glass of wine. (Very green and eco friendly).
  4. Reduced or no sulphites. Organic wines may contain sulphites as a preservative, but in much lower doses than non-organic wine. Many people are sensitive or allergic to SO2 (asthmatics for example may react badly), and sulphites often make hangovers even worse. Their absence means more people can drink wine without a headache or other side effects – and it tends to lead to a much more pleasant taste!
  5. Organic wines are often grown by smaller farmers. This means you’re supporting not only smaller farmers and local businesses – but you’re also supporting people who care about the environment.
  6. Availability. Due to demand and organic farming improvements, more and more wines are available. This means you have more options at your local wine stores and restaurants.
  7. Finally, consider drinking eco-friendly wine because it may simply taste better than many other standard non-organic wines. You don’t have any chemical tastes or additives; you’re getting a simple, straightforward bottle of wine. However, don’t let the simplicity fool you – many organically grown wines are quite sophisticated. Biodynamic farming has been around for decades. Organic vineyards are popping up around the globe. That means more variety for you.

The Downside to Organic Wine

organic wine isn't all perfectNow, a little sip of reality here.

Is ALL organic wine great? No.  A bottle of even organic wine may not appeal. Some wines – and winemakers – are better than others.

Plus, you usually pay more for it (because working a vineyard without sprays is more costly).

But if you enjoy a good glass of wine from time to time, do consider organic wine. It’s good for your health, and the health of the planet. It’s good for small business and farms.

And ultimately – it just tastes good.
