How Much Plastic Do YOU Drink?

Drinking water is very good for us.   But do we drink in an eco-friendly way?  Today’s video is an interesting take on why we drink bottled water.

(This video is not new – but it’s still relevant).

If you prefer to read, here is a summary of the video.

Bottled water may (or may not) be cleaner than tap, but it almost always loses on “taste tests” – people prefer the taste of tap water across America when given a blind test.

Bottled water companies say they’re just supplying demand. But they created the demand – demand for soda decreased, and they needed to grow. So they scared people about tap water. Then they marketed purity, showing pristine streams – yet most bottled water is just filtered tap water.

Oil / petroleum is used to make plastic bottles to hold the water – and oil is used to transport it all over the world. The bottles are only used once, then ditched. They either litter, or they last for thousands of years in landfills. Many developed countries take their plastic recycling and ship it off to poorer countries, where it causes havoc.

So, take back the tap. Grab a re-usable bottle on the way out, instead of buying a new bottle. It’s a habit that’s easy to adopt.
In the US, tap water is under-funded, so lobby for clean tap water for all. Try to change your school or office – ask them to save money and stop buying bottled water.
