How To Make Your Eco-Friendly Relocation More Planet-Friendly

Moving or relocating can be exciting – but it’s also a LOT of work. And most moves are seriously bad for the planet – lots of cardboard boxes, used once then discarded. Lots of bubble wrap (made from fossil fuels), packing peanuts and more. Luckily though, it’s easy to make some small changes that transform it into an eco-friendly relocation.

Here are 3 simple packing tips for organizing an eco-friendly DIY move:

1.  Reduce – Use Old Clothes, Newspapers and More

When you wrap your precious possessions in old clothes, you protect them from damage. You can also use your blankets, towels and sheets as protective packaging – you need to move them anyway, so make them work for you!

On the same lines, wrap stemware or glasses in socks, and nest smaller items inside larger items.

Stuff boxes with old newspapers – they’re a cheaper and greener alternative to packing peanuts which keep your goods intact inside their boxes.

Another way to Reduce your demand for new materials is to consider borrowing used cardboard boxes from your friends or neighbours who have recently relocated.

Some moving companies offer re-usable moving boxes. You pay to rent them, and then return them. You reduce demand for new boxes, and save money too.

2. Reduce Your “Stuff” and Save Gas / Petrol

Have a good clear-out before you move. Have a car boot sale or yard sale, sell stuff on Etsy or your local marketplace. Or donate items.

Take only what you really can’t live without.

Moving less stuff means fewer trips for transportation – and thus less consumption of gas, diesel or petrol. And less work for you as well!

3.  Reuse And Recycle for an Eco-Friendly Relocation

Or make use of biodegradable or recyclable products.

Reusable plastic bins are great for storage and handy to use instead of cardboard boxes for an eco-friendly relocation.

Or you might even be able to use edible packing materials – dispose of edible WikiCell containers by eating them after use!

The great thing about all of these tips is that they’re easy and they save you money, while you help to save the planet!
